Barcelona Equal Their Best La Liga Start With 3-0 Win Over Getafe; Real Madrid Win 1-0 but Vinícius Is Sent Off
Barcelona beat Getafe 3-0 at Spotify Camp Nou on Saturday, October 10, to make it eight wins from eight in La Liga and equal the best start to a league season in the club’s history. Anthony Gordon scored his first Barcelona goal in the second minute, Gabriel Jesus added a second on the half-hour, and Jules Koundé finished a Lamine Yamal cross in the 73rd minute. Later on Saturday, Real Madrid beat Villarreal 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu through Yan Diomande, but Vinícius Júnior was sent off after a VAR review and now waits for a ruling that could affect the Clásico on October 25.

Gordon scores his first Barcelona goal after 78 seconds
It took Barcelona 78 seconds to break Getafe. Gordon took the ball on the edge of the area, got past defenders and shot low from 18 yards. BBC Sport reported that the shot took a deflection off Getafe’s Mario Martín and wrong-footed goalkeeper David Soria. Gordon thumped the badge on his chest and finished with an archer celebration.
The 25-year-old England winger joined from Newcastle in May in a deal BBC Sport put at £69m-plus. He had set up four goals for his new club without scoring one. beIN Sports counted him as the 10th English player to score in La Liga this century and noted that his was the earliest goal by anyone in the competition this season.
BBC Sport placed it against Barcelona’s history of British signings. Gary Lineker scored on his La Liga debut in a 2-0 win over Racing Santander in 1986, and Mark Hughes scored in his third appearance later that year in a 2-0 win over Cádiz. Gordon waited longer than both, though he arrived on the back of goals for England in the recent Nations League matches.
Hansi Flick was brief about him. “He’s doing very well,” Flick said, according to AFP. “He scored with England. He has a lot of confidence… he gives us a lot.” More on the player is on his Wikipedia page.
Gabriel Jesus starts in place of Raphinha and scores
Barcelona were without Raphinha, the team’s leading scorer, who picked up a muscle problem on Brazil duty. Flick said before the game that it was “not a big injury, but we have to take care about this”, and the club’s official report called it a minor thigh problem. Jesus took his place and made his first start for the club.
His goal came after Getafe defender Zaid Romero was caught on the ball in his own box. Jesus took it and finished low into the bottom corner. The club’s match report pointed out that Jesus has had three shots on target for Barcelona and all three have gone in.
“Being at Barca is a dream… playing with these players is very easy too, everyone plays very well,” Jesus told DAZN, as quoted by AFP. “That makes it easier for me as a striker, to have chances.” He added that he hoped Raphinha would recover quickly “because of course the team misses him”.
Raphinha was still part of the evening. Before kick-off he was presented with La Liga’s Player of the Month award for September, and Pedro Rodríguez, who recently retired, took the ceremonial kick-off, according to the club.
Barcelona had 23 shots to Getafe’s four
The score undersold the gap. BBC Sport’s match stats show how little Getafe saw of the ball, and the third goal, which came after the break, was the only one of the second half.
- Possession: Barcelona 82.7%, Getafe 17.3%
- Shots: 23 to 4, with 8 on target to 1
- Passes: 858 to 173
- Touches in the opposition box: 30 to 3
- Goalkeeper saves: Soria 5, Barcelona’s Joan García 1
- Attendance at Camp Nou: 59,465
Koundé’s goal in the 73rd minute was his own landmark. It came in his 194th appearance for Barcelona, which the club said passed Éric Abidal as the most by a French player. Yamal supplied the cross and had a volley curl just wide late on. Barcelona’s report added that a late penalty appeal was turned down.
Eight wins from eight equals the 2013-14 start
BBC Sport, beIN Sports and the club agree on the record: Barcelona also won their first eight league games in 2013-14 under Gerardo Martino. The current side has 24 points, 34 goals scored and seven conceded from eight matches, according to the BBC table. beIN noted that they have scored at least three goals in all but one of those games. AFP counted it as a ninth win from nine across all competitions this season.
The nearest challenger is five points behind. Atlético Madrid won 2-1 at Alavés earlier on Saturday. Alejandro Grimaldo scored for Atlético, Lucas Boyé equalised from the penalty spot, Alavés lost Ángel Pérez to a red card, and Cristian Romero headed the winner in the 87th minute from an Álex Baena cross. “It’s always important that the goal comes from wherever it comes, as long as it comes,” Diego Simeone said, per AFP. That left Atlético on 19 points and Real Madrid on 18, with Real Betis fourth on 16 after seven games.
Sunday brings the Premier League’s heaviest fixture, with Manchester City visiting Liverpool at Anfield at 4:30 pm UK time (9 pm in India) for their first game since being found guilty on 114 of 115 charges. More football reports are on our football page.
Diomande’s goal wins it for Real Madrid at the Bernabéu
José Mourinho left Vinícius out of the starting XI after admitting the forward had been unable to find his best form this season, according to ESPN. Diomande started in his place and Kylian Mbappé was fit to start, hitting a post after seven minutes. AFP called the first half largely dull, and the home fans were unhappy at the break.
The goal came just after the hour. Villarreal half-cleared a Real Madrid attack and the ball reached Federico Valverde on the right. He skipped a challenge, moved inside and slipped Diomande in with a through ball. Diomande swivelled and finished low into the far corner for his first goal for the club. It was initially flagged for offside and given after a VAR check.

AFP described the 19-year-old as Real Madrid’s record 140-million-euro ($157 million) signing. Villarreal pressed late, and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois denied Pape Gueye twice and later substitutes Carlos Romero and Gerard Moreno, according to ESPN.
Vinícius is sent off after his goal is ruled out
Vinícius came on in the 52nd minute with the game goalless, replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold, per beIN. About 20 minutes after his introduction, he converted a pass from Jude Bellingham, who had raced clear, and Mourinho ran across the pitch to celebrate. Then the referee, Isidro Díaz de Mera, went to the pitchside monitor. Replays showed Vinícius had pulled the hair of Villarreal’s Nathan Saliba in the build-up. The goal was cancelled and Vinícius was shown a straight red card.
ESPN quoted the referee’s report, which said Vinícius “disputed the [red card] decision, shouting, moving towards me with an aggressive attitude, and having to be restrained by his teammates.” Villarreal defender Juan Foyth was more measured: “I don’t think he meant to hurt anyone but it is a red card.”
Real Madrid took it badly. Four of their players were booked in the closing minutes. “I don’t understand what’s happening with the referees, with the red card. I don’t understand it,” midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni told Real Madrid TV. Mourinho skipped his post-match news conference. AFP, citing a club source, said it was in protest at the refereeing. Vinícius wrote on Instagram: “Sorry to my team and the fans.”
The disciplinary panel of the Spanish football federation is due to confirm the punishment this week, ESPN reported. beIN Sports relayed Spanish media reports that violent conduct away from the play under Article 103.2 can carry two to three matches, and possibly four. Real Madrid have one league game before the Clásico, at home to Sevilla on October 18, so a ban of two games or more rules him out of Camp Nou. beIN added that Champions League games against Roma and RB Leipzig would not count towards a domestic ban.
It has been a week of discipline stories in football. Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored his 980th career goal for Al Nassr, has been suspended by the Portuguese FA after leaving the national team camp, a case we covered when a legal expert said the ban could be cut to 15 days.
Barcelona’s next four games, Real Madrid’s next two
Barcelona travel to Istanbul to face Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday, October 13. Kick-off is 3 pm Eastern time, which is 12:30 am on Wednesday in India. Raphinha will not play. “He’s not available tomorrow or in Istanbul against Galatasaray,” Flick said on Friday, per ESPN. After that comes an away game at Real Betis on Saturday, October 17, and a Champions League trip to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, October 20.
Real Madrid host Sevilla on October 18. Then comes the Clásico at Camp Nou on Sunday, October 25, and the federation’s ruling on Vinícius will be known well before it.
